The importance of Technology in education

The concept of using technology in distance education is a relatively old concept since the advent of radio and television, as early as the 1920 (Roblyer & Doering, 2010 pg. 6). This short essay will illustrate the importance of the use of technology in education from radio/television to current technology such as social media, virtual communication, and etc…

In order to learn of its importance of the use of technology in distance education we first have to understand the important and needs for distance education. “In 1973 Moore introduced the theory of independent study, and vital foundation distance education” (Galusha Jill, 1997) Theory implies that a successful education can be can be achieves even with the instructor and learner are not physically present (Galusha Jill, 1997.) To assist with the delivery of education content during this time the most advance were used. These technologies include audiocassette, telephone, radio, and other electronic technology available at the time (Galusha Jill, 1997.) The significant factor of distance education is that it provides a means for neither working profession, or simply any individual who cannot afford the time nor spending to attend traditional courses. As early as 1984 a survey of a tele-course, a form of early distance education, participants found over half the students participating the course were at least thirty year of age. More significantly, eighty percent of participant was employed and over fifty percent were with full time employment pursuing their academic goal (Galusha Jill, 1997.) Even in those early days of distance education, its significant is absolute clear and uses of technology to facilitate instruction are a vital component of distance education. Even our government has turn to education to provide additional training and education for its employee. One prime example is the U.S. Army, who has been employing the same distance education methods to provide training for employees with in its organization since 1940's (Wisher, R., Sabol, M., Moses, F. 2002). As time and technology progresses the uses of technology in distance education is even more vital as it’s create fresh and lush environment for learning.

Let’s skips forward to the present, as technology progresses, so does distance education. From the humble means of providing linear educational materials such as video cassette, radio, television and etc… the use of technology in education has significantly progress as well. Instructor todays are encouraged to assume the roles of facilitator instead of simply present the course material in linear manners (Gustavo Prestera & Leslie Moller, 2001.) The shift is now focus on knowledge building instead of simply uniformly provides instruction to student. That shifts the instructor role from delivering the content to presenting content to distance learner in a meaningful way that will allow each learner a fair chance of comprehension. For example, in a quantitative study of an online course, it was reported that
Electronic discussion responses contained over one hundreds word while in person responses was far greater (Gustavo Prestera & Leslie Moller, 2001.) The examples above shows that technology properly uses in distance education can greatly improve learning. But how does more responds equate to an improve education? Even of quantitatively the materials in the students Reponses are not vital, its sparks a conversation, an interested that will drive the learner to a better upstanding of a particular subject area. So great is the influence of technology on distance education that many universities not only developed education program, online assistance services to provides tools and support for the technology employed and uses. For example, California State University at Monterey Bay has developed online databases for its many interactive tools. Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis developed an extensive online course support system call ONCOURSE. These are but a few of the examples of the invaluable uses of technology being uses to support and facilitate distance education (Sarena Seifer & Tanis Mihalynuk, 2001.)

The importance of distance education cannot be denied, its greatest benefits is allow learner who lack the traditional means to be able have a chance of realizing their educational goals. Important as it is, distance education would never be the same without the extended uses of technology that compliments it. Allowing each learner the ability to learn asynchronously through a lush educational environment that technology brings. In these short paragraphs, hopefully I was able to illustrate the important of the uses of technology in distance education.
